Make your documents easier for an adviser to understand

Write down your question, put events in date order and choose the documents that help explain it. This gives an adviser a clear place to start.

What this means for you

Start with the question you need answered. Then share the dates and documents that help explain it.

Write down what you need help with

An adviser needs to know what you want to understand. Try to ask one clear question rather than sending every file without an explanation.

Made-up example: “These two letters show different end dates. Please help me understand which applies.” This is easier to follow than “Please check all my documents”.

Include the visa route you have recorded and the next step you are considering. Describe the problem without trying to decide the legal answer yourself.

Put events in date order

A timeline is a list of events in the order they happened. Keep it short and link each important event to the document you have.

For example: “12 March — received employer letter — copy attached.” If a date comes from memory, say that. If you wrote the note later, record that date too.

Mark anything you cannot confirm. Do not guess a date just to fill a blank. A reviewer needs to see what is known and what still needs checking.

Check the recipient and attachments

GOV.UK provides a service to find an immigration adviser. Check their current registration and whether they can help with your type of question.

Open your attachments before sending. Check that the pages are readable and belong to the right person. Share the information needed for the enquiry.

In REKODHA, review the recipient and selected documents before confirming the share. Prepare & share helps organise the pack; Professional help helps you find support.

Keep the reply and next steps

Save the response with your enquiry. Keep any reference number, requested documents and dates you need to act by.

If you do not understand a reply, ask the adviser to explain it. Do not turn your own guess about the reply into an instruction.

Keep the original response as well as your notes. This makes it easier to explain what you asked, what you were told and what you did next.
