What documents do I need to renew a Skilled Worker visa?

Prepare the passport, job and sponsorship information for a Skilled Worker extension, and check which extra evidence your own application asks for.

What this means for you

Confirm your identity, current permission and sponsorship information first. Keep the application’s actual document checklist separate from your longer personal record.

Check that this is an extension

This guide covers a main applicant extending Skilled Worker permission in the UK. GOV.UK describes an extension where the job, occupation code and sponsor remain the same. A change of job or employer may need the update process instead.

The extension guidance includes additional conditions for some occupations and people with earlier sponsorship. Read those sections if they concern you. A familiar employer does not remove the need to check the current requirements. Sources were checked on 14 October 2026.

Collect the information used in the form

Prepare your passport or another accepted identity document. Keep current permission and previous application references easy to find. Follow the form’s identity instructions.

Ask your employer for the new CoS reference. CoS means certificate of sponsorship. Check the job title, annual salary, occupation code, employer name and sponsor licence number against the employer’s records.

The general documents guide lists English-language proof too. Keep previous proof available and use the extension form to identify what it asks you to provide. An application checklist and a general guidance page serve different purposes.

Check why extra documents are requested

Some evidence is only relevant in particular circumstances. The official documents page lists examples such as savings, family relationship evidence, qualifications and an ATAS certificate for certain research work. ATAS is an approval scheme for specified sensitive study or research.

Do not assume every item applies to you. Read the condition attached to each item. If you are unsure why something is requested, clarify it before submitting a document that answers a different question.

Keep readable originals and any required certified translations. Label each file with the person and period it concerns.

Resolve differences before application day

Made-up example: an engineer finds one job title in an old contract and another in the proposed sponsorship details. He asks the employer to explain the change and checks whether it affects the type of application.

Use REKODHA to keep the job history, supporting files and questions together. This helps preparation but does not notify UKVI, the Home Office immigration service, or submit a visa application.

Check your own expiry date and each dependant’s separately. Keep the final document checklist and submission confirmation so you know exactly what was sent.
